Annual Student Art Show
Posted Thursday, April 8, 2004 - 12:00am

With great anticipation from CEU art students and their benefactors, Gallery East opened the Annual Student Show which will run through April 23.

"The Annual Student Show gives students a venue for the work they've done throughout year, allowing them to showcase their art," stated Gallery East Director, Brent Haddock.

"We had 222 pieces that were submitted consisting of three dimensional, computer graphics, paintings, photographs, prints, and drawings.

"Of those 222, the initial four-member jury selected 102 to be in the show.

As professional artists, Haddock and the initial jury recognize the disappointment students may feel following a jury cut.

"It's part of the process every artist goes through ... sometimes it's tough.

"The selections were made based on what the jury felt best showcased the artistic abilities and talents of our students at large," stated Haddock.

Anthony Lott, art instructor at CEU San Juan, will be the unbiased juror to determine awards such as Best of Show, honorable mentions, Departmental Honors and a $100 CEU Bookstore gift certificate.

A greater number of pieces were accepted into the show this year due to the enlarged space of the new Gallery East.

"This year, we don't have to double stack the art work and the gallery looks great," stated Haddock.

In addition to the artwork displayed in the gallery, art classes will showcase three projects outside the gallery's entrance.

A large silver and magenta sculpture created by the three-dimensional arts students, sidewalk chalk drawings by the drawing students and cyanotype fabric sheets by the photography students will be displayed by April 16.

According to Haddock, approximately 90 percent of the student artwork is available for purchase by Gallery East patrons.

Interested buyers should leave their contact information with a gallery host/hostess to arrange a purchase. Buyers will be contacted by artists once the student exhibit is closed.

The student show is Gallery East's final exhibit for the 2003-04 school year and will run through Friday, April 23. Regular gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Students and the public are welcome to attend the opening reception Friday, April 16, from 7 - 9 p.m., in Gallery East. Light refreshments will be served courtesy of President Ryan and Anne Thomas.

The Annual Student Show was made possible by the generous support of College of Eastern Utah, Utah Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, D.C.

"I also really want to thank President and Anne Thomas, Mike King, and the Bookstore for their generous support. I'm truly grateful, as are the art students," stated Haddock.
