Movies are something that can captivate, entertain and inspire us. I have compiled a collection of my favorite sports movies, and quotes.
Caddyshack- Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield made this golf classic, one of my favorite sports movies. Murray plays the part of a groundskeeper at an upscale country club.
My favorite part: Carl Spackler, played by Murray, fantasizes about winning the Masters while he hacks away at a patch of flowers near the clubhouse. He says it’s a “Cinderella story. Outta nowhere, a former greens keeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac … It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!”
Field of Dreams- The essential baseball movie. Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is led by a mysterious voice to ease the pain of baseball players that died but still long to play the game they love. Also he helps Terrance Mann, played by James Earl Jones a reclusive writer, who loved baseball growing up.
My favorite part: “If you build it, he will come.”
Remember the Titans- This football movie tackles the issues of racism in America, when two Virginia schools are de-segregated to form one school. Denzel Washington is great as Head Coach Herman Boone, who brings the team together and wins the Virginia State Championship.
My favorite part: “Coach Boone: We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football and I will break my foot off in your John Brown-hind parts and then you will run a mile. Perfection. Let’s go to work.”
Any Given Sunday- This movie features one of the greatest speeches ever made in a movie. Al Pacino is the coach of the fictional football team the Miami Sharks, a team that was once great, but is now struggling to regain its past glory.
My favorite part: “I’ll tell you this, in any fight it’s the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. And I know, if I’m gonna have any life anymore it’s because I’m still willing to fight and die for that inch, because that’s what living is, the six inches in front of your face. Now I can’t make you do it. You’ve got to look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes. Now I think ya going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. You’re gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team, because he knows when it comes down to it, you’re gonna do the same for him. That’s a team gentlemen, and either, we heal now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That’s football guys, that’s all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?”
Miracle- This is my all-time favorite sport’s movie. I think everyone knows the story of the 1980 Olympic Hockey team, a team made up of amatures that took on the world, and won the gold medal when no one thought they could. I couldn’t pick just one favorite quote from this movie, so here a few of my favorites.
Herb Brooks: “Great moments … are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here, tonight, boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game. If we played ’em 10 times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight.”
“When you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates. And the name on the front is a hell of a lot more important than the one on the back!”
I leave you with not only one of the greatest movie quotes, but the greatest call in sports history, the immortal words of Al Michaels, “Five seconds left in the game. Do you believe in miracles? YES!”
