USU Eastern men’s soccer team continues to prepare for next season, with weekend games scheduled throughout spring semester.
On March 24, the Eagles played on their home field against Brigham Young University Idaho.
Because of a change in the schedule, the game was played two hours ahead of the expected, and both teams didn’t have much time to warm up. That fact explained why Eastern’s team started slow and sleepy.
In the first 10 minutes, BYU I scored a goal from outside the eighteen, followed by a free kick that resulted in an early 2-0 lead. After a few minutes the coaches made substitutions, and the team played better the last 20 minutes of the first half. In a free-kick, Carlos Heredia scored a late first half goal, so the Eagles would go to the half down 2-1.
The second half was a completely different game. The team came ready and controlled the entire rest of the game. BYUI barely had any chances in this half.
Garrett Boston scored a goal from far away, leading to a tie-game. After the pressure Eastern was imposing, the expected happened and the Eagles scored on a play by Mat Clark.
Even with a 3-2 win on the sheets, the team had a lot of easy opportunities they couldn’t capitalize. By the coaches-eyes, this game should had been an easy win.
On the following weekend of March 31, the team travelled to Salt Lake City to play against the University of Utah.
After two silly mistakes caused by the high-defense pressure by the Utes, the Eagles started the game losing 2-0 again.
Coach Jared Woodhouse made substitutions in the middle of the first half, and after a quality pass by the Middlefield, Heredia finished the play scoring the first goal for the Eagles.
In the second half, the team came out playing better and controlling the ball more. After a perfect pass by Guillermo Hernandez, Heredia was in the right place to tie the game and score his second of the day.
Heredia said, “I think we played better, specially on the second half when they barely didn’t pass the half. They have a solid defense that made hard for us to score. Our team were better, they just had more luck.”
In the last minute of the game, the referee called a penalty for the U, after a doubtful handball by the Eagles defense. The game ended at 3-2 for the Utes, but it showed tremendous development by the Eagles team. They played this same team in the fall and lost by 5- 0.
Coach Ammon Bennett said, “We controlled the game probably 65 Percent of the time and all the chances of goals were create either by a good possession by us, or a mistake that created an easy opportunity for the U. Their team couldn’t find anything on us, we just gave them two goals on silly mistakes close to our goal and a penalty at the end on a unlucky handball. Overall, we played better soccer and know that could get off the pitch with a win.”
The Eagles play Mesa State University in Grand Junction, Colorado, next weekend on April 7. They conclude spring travel in Salt Lake City where they play Westminster College on Saturday, April 14.
