Enrollment at USU Eastern continues to decline as fall semester 2017 dropped 18 students from fall semester 2016. However, the real enrollment story began seven years ago when USU and College of Eastern Utah merged. Enrollment at Eastern was 2,634 in 2010 compared to 1,950 in 2017, a net loss of 684 students. In that same time period, Utah State University dropped 722 students since 2010 from a high of 28,401 to 27,679 in 2017.

Have you ever wanted to fly or be face to face with a whale? That is exactly what students and faculty did at the Virtual Reality Demo in the LLC, Nov. 8-9. Robby Sproul, technical professional at USU Logan, visited Eastern’s Campus to show off his incredible VR gear. USU has a virtual reality classroom for faculty to explore the possibilities of using it for educational purposes. Sproul said, “We do not want to invest in something that will not be used.”

Utah State University Eastern kicks off its annual Bread ‘n’ Soup Night starting Monday, Nov. 6 and continuing Nov. 13 and 20. A campus and community favorite since 1997, Bread ‘n’ Soup Night brings people together to share a simple meal as a fundraiser for the Carbon County Food Bank. “With so many families in need, it’s rewarding to offer such a fun way for the community to help,” explains student Kori Jorgensen, a native of Layton, and Eastern’s SUN Center co-leader.

A great deal of change has been going on at the Utah State University Eastern campus lately. A statue with a series of the Aggie “A” was installed outside of the BDAC, the Geary Theater construction is wrapping up and a Zen garden is being installed in front of the library. Speaking of the library, it was recently renamed the “Library and Learning Commons” and has seen a significant renovation since Summer 2017. To demonstrate this progress, the LLC held an open house on Nov. 1, which gave people the opportunity to see the changes made up to this point.

A USU Eastern welding student has done what no other welder in the 80-year history of the school has done before, nor any other Utah welding competitor for that matter. . . . Chandler Vincent was named the top welding competitor in the United States and the fifth best in the world.

The death of a young man is what it takes to bring attention to such a big problem… Opiate addiction is everywhere and the statistics are getting worse. A panel of five people including a doctor, a social worker, a young addict, the sheriff and a representative from Four Corners Behavioral Health were at USU Eastern on Oct. 4 to lead a community discussion on the dire seriousness of opiate addiction in Carbon county.

The Eastern-Price campus now has an Aggie A in front of the BDAC. Utah State University added the “A” to the campus to unite all Aggies.

2016 may be the darkest year ever in terms of sexual assault for both Utah State University and Utah State University Eastern, according to the Clery Act, a report that requires colleges and universities that receive federal aid to file a public annual security report every Oct. 1 USU had 22 accounts of rape and over 20 accounts of sexual assaults reported, up from only six accounts of rape and two accounts of sexual assault in 2015.
